Sedgwick County Lifts Ban on Fireworks in Unincorporated Areas

Sedgwick County commissioners approve an ordinance, making it legal to possess and shoot fireworks in unincorporated areas of the county over the July 4th holiday.

Under the resolution, fireworks would be allowed July 1st - July 4th, and include July 5th if it falls as a federal holiday; the resolution does not allow selling fireworks in unincorporated areas.

During Wednesday's commission meeting, commissioners heard from several fireworks vendors who also want the county to allow sales in unincorporated areas. The fire department says zoning would have to be changed to allow sales. Commissioners say they want to further study the impact of that move before considering changes allowing fireworks sales.

The debate over the issue started after signs popped up reminding residents that fireworks were banned in unincorporated parts of the county last year.

Sedgwick County's fire chief told commissioners today that there was no increase in fireworks fire or injury during July 4th for small grade fireworks. He also said 77% of those who responded to a survey wanted to make shooting fireworks legal.
